07/07/2009 - Lake District Bluebrid Garden - RHS Tatton 2009

RHS Show Tatton Park 22 - 26 July 2009
The Coppermines and Lakes Cottages are pleased to be once again sponsoring a show garden at the RHS Show Tatton Park (22-26 July 2009)

Along with a consortium of Lake District tourist businesses, award winning garden designers Andy Loudon and Janine Crimmins have been commissioned to create a fantastic show garden. The theme of the garden is Donald Campbell and his hydroplane Bluebird K7 which he used during his last World Water Speed Record attempt in 1967.

Along with the show garden visitors will also be able to view the full size replica of Bluebird K7, on loan from The Lakeland Motor Museum, that was used in the making of the BBC film "Across The Lake" starring Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Members of The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages team will be on hand in the adjacent Lake District Marquee during the show to offer advice about our cottages and handing out our latest brochures.

If you are visiting the show please come along, say hello and pick up our latest information.

26/05/2009 - Donald Campbell Bluebird To Return To Coniston Water

Lake District planners have agreed to temporarily suspend the speed limit on Coniston Water so Bluebird K7 can rekindle some of her glorious past.

The vessel that was raised to the surface eight years ago has been subject of methodical restoration project is hoped to reach 100mph in a one off speed trial to prove her seaworthiness.

Bill Smith, who led the the salvage operation and is in charge of the restoration project said: "I think it is a good result. I am euphoric at the prospect of having the final objective in sight. We now need to prove that she works and is in the condition she was just before the crash all those years ago. We hope to have Bluebird ready for her trial at the end of next year or the beginning of 2011."
