News12/02/2009 - The Bluebird Project
The current Coniston Water byelaws cannot allow any speed in excess of 10 mph, except in a legitimate bid for a National or World speed record. Bluebird K7 holds the British Outright water speed record of 276.3 mph but the team will not mount a serious challenge to this record. The team believe speeds up to 100 mph will be enough to test it. This means the Lake District National Park Authority must either reject the request or propose a byelaw amendment so they can authorise the trials, subject to conditions such as safety and avoiding polluting the lake. 25/01/2009 - Dearer Foreign Holidays As Pound Tumbles
With more and more Britons deciding to stay in the UK for their holidays this year the self catering sector offers great value for money, reliability and the without the worry of exchange rates and surcharges. The best advantage is of course you know right from the outset how much you will spend on food and drink. The Lake District, recently voted the Best Tourist Destination in the UK at the recent British Travel Awards also has the great advantage of over 2,000 miles of public footpath running through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK that has drawn visitors for generations, which of course is all free of charge once you are here on holiday! Cumbria Tourism's spokesperson, Julie Durroch said today: "It looks like 2009 has the potential to be a great year for UK tourism as the ever-weakening pound and volatile fuel costs mean that you just don't get the same value for money overseas. The Lake District is in a particularly great position after winning the Best UK Destination at the British Travel Awards." The evidence so far from Coniston supports this with a huge number of bookings flooding into The Coppermines and Lakes Cottages' office over the last few days. We were staying at the Old Sawmill [The Coppermine Cottages] at the disused coppermines in Coniston. The sawmill lay derelict for many years, until it was converted into four cottages, each linked through internal passageways and doors to accommodate up to 26 people. Our quarter could sleep up to eight, but acted as an excellent base for me, my wife and son. Although just 40 miles long and 33 miles across, The Lake District is home to some of the most stunning countryside in the world. It is home to all of England's highest mountains and longest lakes as well as award-winning accommodation, place to eat and visit. Ian Stephens, Chief Executive of Cumbria Tourism, said: "This is the most significant award the Lake District has won in recent years. The fact we have been named by the public and featured at the UK's leading travel awards is particularly impressive and an important message to convey to visitors for 2009." The British Travel awards are the largest travel awards programme in the UK and an easily recognisable benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out the best in the business. The event consists of the UK's leading professionals from the travel industry and there are over 60 categories. Sponsors of the evening were Lloyds TSB Cardnet. Lorraine Barnes Burton, CEO of The British Travel Awards commented: "The consumer voters for these awards are made up of a large cross section of the UK's travelling public. Consumers are also asked to support their votes, and the compactness of what's on offer in The Lake District, the landscape and the beauty of the area clearly played an important part when choosing their favourite UK Destination."
