All eyes will be on talented local rally driver, Dave Shuttleworth as he aims for victory in this weekend’s Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally.

This exhilarating event, covering 42 miles, that takes place on Saturday 29th November, will see Dave attempt to beat off over 80 competitors to gain the victory that he narrowly missed last year, coming second to David Bogie in his World Rally Class Subaru Impreza.

Dave is hoping his chances this year are more favourable and has spent the last few weeks preparing his Mitsubishi Evo. Having secured sponsorship from The Coppermines and Lakes Cottages the car has been transformed with an up-rated engine and high performance turbo to make it a first class car.

26/10/2008 - The Coppermines & Lake Cottage’s rescue family from a flooded campsite as Coniston Water Lake Level Reaches 50 Year High.

Hope they can walk on water !
Following the torrential rains of Thursday and Saturday, Coniston Water has reached its highest level since 1958.

A family that were flooded were rescued by The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages Managing Director, Philip Johnston. Philip explained: “I received a call at 11pm from a friend in the village asking if I could help the family with our Land Rovers. We were able to accommodate the family in one of our vacant cottages. Flood precautions and drainage works undertaken by us for our outlying cottages, particularly high up in Coppermines Valley, last week meant that our cottage operations are proceeding as normal”

Coniston village was all geared up for the busy half-term holiday weekend but the rain of recent days has put pay to many people’s holiday plans of walking, cycling, sailing and enjoying a cruise on England’s third largest lake. The levels rose gradually on Saturday and by Sunday morning The Coniston Boating Centre and the nearby jetties are all completely underwater. Both Coniston Launch and Steam Yacht Gondola have had to suspend services and the flooded lake became the new star tourist attraction with dozens of people gathering to take photographs. With many people in the area for the half term holiday the village is bustling with the shops and cafés as busy as ever.

The weather is now forecast to be fine & sunny and flood levels are already dropping.

12/09/2008 - No Place Like Home

Every year more and more Brits are giving up their life in the sun to move back to the UK – last year more than 80,000 expats returned.

Some miss family and friends, job opportunities, British culture, pubs, and even the weather, and many Brits are evidently deciding that there’s no place like home.

To investigate this phenomenon, ITV1 is making a second series of the day-time documentary ‘No Place Like home?’

Fairsnape Cottage, Coiston was recently visited by the television crew with Gillian Riding who spent the first 24 years of her life at Fairsnape Cottage and it certainly brought back many fond memories of her time in Coniston before moving to Switzerland.

10/09/2008 - A Great Autumn Lake Breat

Autumn in the Lake District
There's more to the Lake District than Windermere, Ambleside and the K Village. Emma Lavery from the Yorkshire Evening Post, enjoyed a quiet family break in tranquil Coniston.

The two bedroom cottage nestled in the foothills of the Old Man of Coniston was a welcome sight after a stressful Friday night journey.

We had set off for the Lake District far too late to comfortably meet our 10pm deadline to pick up the keys from the petrol station in Coniston village. We finally arrived, tempers frayed, with just minutes to spare.

After stepping out of the drizzle in to our Victorian stone built cottage we got to working on lighting the log fire and soon slipped into holiday mode as the flames crackled away in the snug sitting room. Complete with exposed beams, it had all the old world charm you could wish for plus all the mod cons you need.
