The vessel that was raised to the surface eight years ago has been subject of methodical restoration project is hoped to reach 100mph in a one off speed trial to prove her seaworthiness. Bill Smith, who led the the salvage operation and is in charge of the restoration project said: "I think it is a good result. I am euphoric at the prospect of having the final objective in sight. We now need to prove that she works and is in the condition she was just before the crash all those years ago. We hope to have Bluebird ready for her trial at the end of next year or the beginning of 2011." Bluebird K7 Photograph © 2006 David Ambridge 17/05/2009 - We Are Only Here For The Beer

The current Coniston Water byelaws cannot allow any speed in excess of 10 mph, except in a legitimate bid for a National or World speed record. Bluebird K7 holds the British Outright water speed record of 276.3 mph but the team will not mount a serious challenge to this record. The team believe speeds up to 100 mph will be enough to test it. This means the Lake District National Park Authority must either reject the request or propose a byelaw amendment so they can authorise the trials, subject to conditions such as safety and avoiding polluting the lake.
