24/06/2010 - Groom imports a veteran car for the Coppermines wedding

Graham drives Jan & Phil to their Coppermines Valley reception.
A veteran car travelled 6000 miles to take pride of place as 'special guest' at the wedding of The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages Managing Director Philip Johnston.

The 1910 Maxwell E Tourer was shipped from Seattle in the USA to Coppermines Valley near Coniston, for the marriage of Philip to his fiancee Jan Tubman.

But that was not the end of the road for the veteran machine.

Instead of being returned to America after the nuptials, the car is now available for hire for weddings, film shoots and other special occasions.

Please contact us for details.

15/02/2010 - Valentine's Day Reunion

Mr & Mrs Allen Reunited With Their Missing Wedding Ring
A couple from South Yorkshire were reunited on Valentines Day with a wedding ring they lost during a visit to Coniston to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.

Mr & Mrs Allen from near Sheffield had visited Coniston at New Year to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary but whilst walking in the snow in the Coppermines Valley Mr Allen had lost his gold wedding ring. Despite searching for two days for the ring Mr & Mrs Allen were unable to find it and asked locals to help. The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages placed posters around the valley and offered to be a point of contact should anyone find the ring.

As the 75cm of Christmas snow melted in the Coppermines Valley over the following weeks the chances of anyone finding the ring seemed more and more remote. To everybodies surprise the ring was found during the first week in February and Mr & Mrs Allen were informed.

Mr & Mrs Allen quickly arranged to return to Coniston on Valentines Day to collect the ring from the Coppermines & Lakes Cottages Office.

Philip Johnston, Managing Director of The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages, said: "I have lived in The Coppermines Valley for thirty years and I must say I thought there was very little chance that the wedding ring would turn up, we have run snow ploughs and gritters up and down the valley road through the winter and finding the ring really would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. We were delighted when the ring was returned to our office in Coniston and that we could re-unite Mr & Mrs Allen with the wedding ring on Valentines Day!"

08/01/2010 - We're open for business as usual - despite the snow!!

The clear high road to Coniston with snow on the fells
Happy New Year!!

What a tremendous Christmas and New Year we have had! Coniston and the Lake District has so far experienced three weeks of fantastic alpine weather.

Over 500 guests battled through the heaviest snow we had seen for 15 years to reach their Christmas holiday cottages on the 22nd December but by the time most of the guests arrived most of the roads had been cleared including the road to The Coppermines Valley (so far we have used 8 tonnes of rock salt from our own stockpile to keep this road open). All our Christmas and New Year guests thoroughly enjoyed the best of the snow covered Lakeland scenery we have seen for years and of course sales of logs and kindling soared!

All the major roads through the Lake District are fully open and with exception of one or two of the high mountain passes most of the minor routes have also been cleared.

The photograph above was taken this afternoon and shows the road to Coniston from Hawkshead. You can see that the road is clear of snow and ice, there is not a cloud in the sky and the Coniston Fells look magnificent covered in snow.

Nearly all of the tarns are now frozen over and even larger lakes such as Derwentwater and Lake Bassentwaite are now covered in ice.

All our cottages are currently fully accessible and our guests are all commenting on how fantastic it is to be here to see the Lake District at its winter's best.
