October Half Term in The Lake District
October half term in The Lake District is a special time as the leaves are starting to turn, there is a crisp freshness in the air, but the sun often still shines all day making exploring easy! Evenings are darker and cosier than the summer, with cottages from the Coppermines coming alive with roaring fires and families playing boardgames as the nights draw in.
With many attractions and events unsure of going ahead depending on the Covid restrictions at the time we have included a list of October Half Term Adventures that you will probably be able to do, whatever the restrictions. But as ever, please check the details of both the government advice and the local providers before making plans or booking activities.
Adventures in October

Walking in the great outdoors – One of the best ways to really explore the Lake District and spend time together as a family having adventures is by simply going for a walk. Depending on your experience level there are hundreds of walks and trails to choose from in the Lake District, from simple flat lakeside strolls to bagging a few wainwrights while you are here. Spectacular scenery and family time guaranteed!
Board Game Nights – Even if the weather is fine, an evening in a cosy Coppermines Cottage with a roaring fire and your favourite family board game is a welcome activity for all the family. Classics like Monopoly and Scrabble are always firm favourites, try these along side more modern family games such as Catan and Exploding Kittens for much fun and laughter!
National Trust Activities – If you are a National Trust Member (and it really is recommended if you are visiting the Lake District) then visiting a National Trust site like Sticklebarn, Fell Foot, or Alan Banks during October half term is a great idea. They often have themed activities and events for all the family. It is good to check availability in advance as they have reduced capacity for both events and car parking at some sites.
Get out on a Lake – Coniston is a beautiful lake to discover in Autumn as the colours surrounding it are simply stunning. If the weather is fine, then getting out on the water either on a tour boar, such as the steam gondola, or a boat under your own power is a fun activity for all the family.
Forest Adventures – Winlatter and Grizedale are two lovely forests within easy reach of your Coppermines Cottage. Forest trails, mountain biking, llama walking and even art trails are all available under the canopy of autumn leaves. October half term in the forest is a truly magical time.
Brockhole Visitor Centre – A one stop visitor centre for the Lake District filled with places to discover and activities to try. Check on their website to see what is available this October Half Term and how to book for it as they are often busy, and as with most things, capacity is reduced for safety.
There are many events that normally happen in October half term in the Lake District that may have been postponed this year, so check their websites for the latest info before heading out.
