Autumn is the perfect time to visit the Lake District, the ever-changing nature of the season is a wonder to behold and no two days are alike. Take in the magnificent mosaic of colours, dodge the showers by ducking into a warm, welcoming pub and sit back and watch the world transform around you. Cooler days, a spectacular autumnal landscape and fewer crowds also make October the perfect time to spend glorious days walking and cosy evening’s fireside.

For those travelling to the Lakes with families and looking for different ways to keep everyone entertained then you won’t be short of things to do either, in fact, you may struggle to fit everything in! Muncaster Castle Halloween Week 23rd - 28th Oct
If you’re feeling brave enough then what better way to enjoy the run-up to Halloween than visiting a real haunted house. A week of activities and events includes a monster cabaret, a scary maze, spooky storytelling, a twilight owls display and the highlight; a Halloween tour of the castle - definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Halloween Fun at Holker Hall 25th - 28th Oct
This year the grand stately home of the Cavendish family will become a Witches and Wizardry School. Aspiring witches and wizards can enter the magical school and how to make spells & potions with Professor Trelawney, Harry Potter and Hermione Granger in this fully immersive theatre event. Booking is essential!

The Brockhole Halloween Experience 20th - 31st October
With it grounds gently sloping to the shores and Windermere and breath-taking views across the lake Brockhole has more than just good looks; with treetop nets, an amazing (and free!) adventure playground and a whole host of other, Halloween themed, activities on offer Brockhole makes for a great stop on your half term travels.

Ravenglass to Eskdale Ghost Trains 27th - 28th October
No visit to the Lakes is complete without a ride on the La’al Ratty. The journey along one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England carries you through seven miles of spectacular mountain scenery. This October you can travel the line in darkness on the Ghost Train as well as take part in family activities at Dalegarth Station.

Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway Witches and Wizards Week 22nd - 26th October
Travel to a bygone era on this historic branch-line from Haverthwaite Station to the Lakes Aquarium. Spot the haunted carriage and take part in on-board creepy crafts. Children in fancy dress can even travel for free and gain free entry into the Aquarium!

Millerbeck Railway Halloween Train - 27th and 28th October
Shhh! this charming little railway is the Lake District’s “best-kept secret” and a favourite amongst locals. Perfect for families with younger children, take a ride on this 7¼" gauge railway and spot spooky spectres on your journey around this beautiful private meadow and woodland. Just don’t tell anyone!
