Travel south from Hawkshead on the way to the Windermere ferry, and you'll find the beautiful hamlets of Near and Far Sawrey. Near Sawrey was famously home to the children's author Beatrix Potter, and her house 'Hill Top' is now preserved by the National Trust in its original state for you to visit and enjoy. But carry on through into adjoining Far Sawrey, and you'll soon discover the grand house that is 'Sawrey Knotts'.

Built in 1861 during the Victorian era, it was once a well-to-do gentleman's country residence. Perched high above the valley, it is now a collection of beautifully converted properties, each with its own character and charm.

As you might expect from the name, this small terraced building was once the stable serving the grand house. Of course that's no longer the case, as it's now been tastefully transformed into a romantic retreat for two. Or perhaps two and a small one.

It's all so romantic, and conveniently located for the best that the Lake District has to offer.

Ground floor
You enter the old stable from the cobbled courtyard. In the small entrance hall there's plenty of hanging space, and notice the photo of bygone visitors arriving at Sawrey Knotts by pony-drawn carriage at the bottom of the stairs. To maximise the wonderful views, the cottage has been configured upside-down. From the entrance hall, a door leads to the large double bedroom (with king size bed) and en suite bathroom with W.C, bath and shower over.

First floor
Stairs from the hall lead you up to the spacious open-plan living room and kitchen area above. With high vaulted ceilings and original exposed timbers, the views towards Windermere, Gummer's Howe and the countryside beyond are stunning. The Aga log-burning stove with its tall chimney pipe is sure to keep you snug, and the fully equipped modern kitchen with electric oven, ceramic hob, extractor unit, fridge, microwave and dishwasher brings the Lake District feel indoors with its locally quarried slate worktops and flooring.

There's a reclining sofa for two, a table for two (with views to the lake), additional seating, and all the modern entertainment features including TV, DVD and mini Hi-Fi.

Outside
Utility/Laundry room immediately next door, with shared coin operated washing/drying facilities.
Use of the beautiful shared gardens extending to 3 acres, including seating, dog pen, lawns, shrubs and mature trees.

Facilities included
Bed linen, electric central heating with conventional radiators, all other electricity serving the property, kindling and logs, Unlimited Wi-Fi Internet connection.

Please note there is a mini-freezer tucked away in the under-stairs cupboard.

Available to hire
Towels, travel cot & high chair.

Parking
Allocated parking for 1 vehicle (approx. 25 yards from property on cobbled/gravel track)

Additional parking is available at the nearby Braithwaite Hall (small fee applies in honesty box).

Nearby
Public Transport 300 yards
Windermere car ferry and access to lake cruises approx. 15 mins walk.

Pub 300 yards
Pub with excellent food/beer and open fires 'Cuckoo Brow Inn' (5 mins walk) or 'The Tower Bank Arms' at Near Sawrey (15 mins walk – just past 'Hill Top').

Shop 2 miles
Ices, cream teas and cakes 700 yards at 'Hilltop' Tearoom (semi-seasonal opening).

Local Activities
The areas surrounding Lake Windermere are some of the most picturesque in the Lake District, picture perfect cottages, dreamy landscapes and quaint villages not to mention home to some of the ever popular Lake District hotspots. Loved by Beatrix Potter, it's not hard to fall in love with the village of Hawkshead and the surrounding hamlets of High Wray, Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey.  Away from the crowds who gather at Hill Top, solace can be found on the shores of the nearby Esthwaite Water and Blenheim Tarn.

At the southern tip of Lake Windermere lies the quaint hamlet of Lakeside which as the name suggests enjoys open access to the lake shore. A favourite for families looking to explore, nearby attractions include the Aquarium of the Lakes, the Lakeland Motor Museum, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway & Fell Foot Park.
