10 Great Things to Do with Kids in The Lake District

 

The Lake District is the UK’s biggest playground and whether it is running free in the great outdoors or having adventures with activity providers, Lakeland is the perfect place for kids to explore and have adventures.

One of the great things about booking a holiday cottage in the Lake District when you have kids with you is that you have your own kitchen so you can prepare the family packed lunch just as they like it and also have a family meal together cosy in the cottage after a great day out adventuring in the fells.

If you want to ensure your kids have the best time when you are visiting the Lake District, then try one or two of the activities in our quick list below:

1. Visit Grizedale Forest – This gorgeous forest, near Hawkshead, offers all kinds of adventure for kids and the whole family. From following the sculpture trail to mountain biking trails (and rental if required) and a Go Ape, your kids will be running, cycling or swinging through the trees for a day they will never forget.

2. Brockhole the Official Visitor Centre – A hub for visitors on the shores of Lake Windermere, this beautifully located visitor centre hosts a range of family friendly activities throughout the year. From canoeing, pony trekking and adventure playgrounds in the summer to Halloween adventures in the Autumn, there will always be something going on here.

3. Have a Picnic – A classic family Lake District activity, one that creates great memories and with the scenic spots available you will defiantly be having lunch with a view.

4. The World of Beatrix Potter – Peter Rabbit is always a family favourite and in Bowness on Windermere there is a whole attraction devoted to Beatrix Potter and her characters. All 23 of her stories are featured, it also has a themed café, and, in the summer, the onsite theatre has a delightful show.

5. Visit a Castle – Playing knights is so much easier when you are in a castle and the Lake District has some great castles on its doorstep. From Wray Castle on the shores of Windermere to Sizergh and its lovely gardens to Lowther a bit further out, these castles make for great family days out and incredible photos for the album!

6. Have a BBQ in your Cottage Garden – When you think of family time (especially in the summer) you often think of BBQ’s and we can think of no nicer place to have a BBQ that in the garden of your Lake District Holiday Cottage. 7. Water Adventures – The Lake District is known for its lakes, so getting your kids to enjoy the water is a must while you are here, try stand up paddle boarding, take a sailing lesson, rent a row boat or just try skimming stones!

8. Push the Boat Out – If you love boats, then exploring them with your kids is a great Lake District Activity. From simple row boats, to heading out on a steamer for a classic view of the lakes to using the ferries as a hop on hop off service to explore the walks at every lakeshore you have so much to choose from!

9. Gaze at the Fishes – The Lakes Aquarium is at the southern edge of Windermere and can be accessed by ferry or by car. It has a fun underwater tunnel, and a range of hands on experiences for your kids to enjoy.

10. Steam Experiences – What family does not enjoy a train journey and even better if it is a steam train! There is the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the train at the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum Railway.
