10 Reasons to visit the Lake District this December

1. No crowds.

Not a “people person”? Like having a walk all to yourself? Or just looking for a weekend of true escapism? Then December is THE time to visit the Lakes. The crowds have dwindled, the towns and villages quietened and the mountain summits emptied of all those except the hardiest of walkers and most determined of fell baggers. But worry not, pubs and restaurants such as those in Coniston village usually stay open throughout the winter, so it’s even easier to find that perfect table for a cooked breakfast, tasty lunch, or delicious dinner.

2. Snow-capped mountains.

If snow is your thing then the first dustings usually fall high on the Cumbrian fells come December. So, whether you’re a keen winter walker looking to get out & about amongst the white stuff, or a passive observer who simply delights in the sight of rugged mountains topped with fresh snow, December is the ideal time to visit the Lake District National Park.

3. Dark nights = dark skies.

If you live in a town or city and are used to experiencing a night sky tainted by orange glow, then the night skies of the Lake District can come as a very pleasant surprise.  Our stargazing cottages have minimal light pollution – perfect for seeing the sky exactly as nature intended. Plus, with shorter days and longer nights there’s more opportunity to see the vast Cumbrian skies filled with infinite stars this December.

4. Cosy pubs with warm welcomes.

That feeling when you discover the perfect country pub… Scrumptious & hearty, steaming hot food, roaring fires and an extensive range of locally brewed beers, elegant wines and other delicious drinks. Snuggle into a comfy corner and settle in for the evening. What could be better? And because many of our cottages are within walking distance to a great pub, you can relax and enjoy a wonderful afternoon or evening (or both) without worrying about transport back to your accommodation. More Malbec anyone?

5. Local Christmas Shopping and Festive Markets.

For those wanting to combine a December break in the Lakes with some Christmas shopping then there’s lots of treasures on offer. Popular towns & villages such as Coniston, Ambleside and Keswick are filled with national brands and independent shops selling local gifts and wares. The twinkling windows and sparkling festive decorations ensure the Lakes is a festive destination this December.  And with bustling Christmas and winter markets such as those found at Holker Winter Festival and Ulverston Dickensian Festival there really is something for all shoppers here in the Lakes this winter.

6. Lower prices – get MORE for less.

December sees some of the lowest and most competitively priced breaks in the Lakes. So you can stay in and enjoy a wonderful break in the Lakes for less. Or, with your savings you could even upgrade to a larger, more luxurious or hot tub cottage for your December getaway. What’s more, our late availability discounts are now live right up until 19th December, so there’s no need to wait to secure your dream Lake District cottage this winter.

7. Christmas in the Lakes.

Can’t agree on who is going to host this year. Come together in one of our larger cottages, ideal for bigger families, groups or friends looking for a place .  Or perhaps you are looking to escape the Christmas rush by heading to the hills of the Lakes. Prepare Christmas dinner in your cottage or dine out and one of the various pub and restaurants with Christmas day menus. All of our cottages come complete with a Christmas Tree, so you can feel at home in the Lakes this Christmas.

8. New Year in the Lakes.

Would you love to wake up on the first morning of 2023 in a charming cottage with a gorgeous lake view? Do you fancy seeing out 2022 in style in a quaint riverside home-from-home? Whatever your New Year wishes, Coppermines have a collection of cottages available to suit all tastes and pockets for full weeks from 28th December and for short, 4 night breaks from 30th December this New Year. So whether you want to celebrate in style with loved ones or escape to your very own Lakeland hideaway you can welcome in 2023 your way.

9. Cosy cottages with real fires.

Staying in is the new going out. And staying in your own cosy, Lake District cottage complete with traditional open fire or log burning stove is the perfect way to spend a wintry evening. Prepare dinner in your fully-equipped cottage kitchen, open a bottle of wine, throw another log on the fire and relax – you’re on holiday!

10. Escape the Festive Frenzy.

We all know that December can become somewhat crazy. Shops filled with gift seeking crowds, streets jam-packed with revellers and Christmas. Music. Everywhere.

So why not take a festive time-out here in the Lake District? There’s not a note of Mariah Carey to be heard up on the fells, the lakes are all but empty of present-hungry hordes and out in the Cumbrian countryside every night is a silent one. So if you’re looking for a restful & rejuvenating pre-Christmas break head to the Lakes District National Park.
