Description At A Glance Virtual Tour Location Testimonials

From its original slate flagstone floors to its beamed ceilings, Bowmanstead Cottage is simply packed with Lakeland character at every turn. Enjoy days spent exploring the pretty cottage garden and cosy evenings in front of the magnificent stone fireplace. It's no wonder Bowmanstead Cottage is firm favourite of guests looking to stay in the beautiful Coniston area.

Hidden away up a quiet lane past and next to the Ship Inn, just south of Coniston, is this C18th farmhouse. Now a beautifully refurbished quintessential cottage, where traditional meets modern.

The cottage has been lovingly cared for by its owners who have managed to create a warm and welcoming base for any who choose to rest their heads here. Lakeland prints adorn the walls and antique furniture complements the property's quirky character. Upon entering all who visit will benefit from its 'home from home' feel. Perhaps an outcome of the small homely touches lovingly chosen by the owner, which appear in every room.

If it's the outdoors you crave then footpaths & cycle ways are close by, going down to the lake for the Cumbrian Way, or into the fells and The Old Man of Coniston. There's also a fantastic large garden available, perfect for lazy days and summer evenings! This cottage is a must for diehard romantics, friends, families or those seeking outdoor adventure straight from the doorstep.

Ground Floor
A typical Lakeland porch invites you into the property and doubles up as an ideal place to leave your walking boots. There's even a stone bench to help. The living room is full of charm and character - beamed ceiling, massive stone hearth with real fireplace, big slate flags covered with rugs & a big cosy leather sofa ideal for curling up in along with TV, DVD & CD player. Up a couple of steps is a separate raised dining area with oak detailing. By contrast there is a modern galley kitchen, with handcrafted slate worktops, big gas range, dishwasher, fridge & microwave.

First Floor
From the living room, there's a hidden narrow stairwell that leads you up, past the pictures of Herdwick sheep, to a landing with low beams (mind your head!).

Bedroom 1 - magnificent double 4-poster bed with dressing area & en-suite bathroom with walk in shower & WC.
Bedroom 2 - king size bed or twin 2'6" single beds

Modern house bathroom with shower & WC.

Outside
Adjacent to the cottage is a beautifully designed and spacious terraced cottage garden. This private hideaway is a lovely spot to while away the evenings and catch the last rays of sunshine. The lower part of the garden offers a place to wander and admire the local slate structures dotted around whilst the upper area offers an abundance of seating areas amongst the shrubs. Beautiful lake views across to Coniston Water, and the green hills of Grizedale beyond, can be enjoyed from the highest level.

Hand painted signs draw your attention to the lockable bicycle storage area which can fit up to 4 bikes. There is also a dog kennel area, should you need to keep an eye on your four legged friend. For fans of mud, an external water tap is readily available, handy for washing off and cleaning up.

Complementing the property is a bright and modern heated utility room, complete with washer, dryer and freezer. This room also contains a useful drying rack, perfect for hanging up wet clothes after a day exploring.

This was our second stay at Bowmanstead Cottage, we loved it so much last year, we booked an extra night this time. The cottage is a perfect blend of traditional Lakeland cottage with modern facilities. Very cosy and comfortable - love the open fire. The location is perfect - right on the Cumbrian Way, also being right next door to a pub is an added bonus!! Thank you for the perfect, much needed break. Your policy of letting guests know as soon as the cottage is ready is fabulous! You are the only company that we have used that does this, and we have used quite a few! Thanks again!

Beautiful cottage, mixing traditional and modern styles perfectly. Loved the email on day of arrival telling us that our cottage was ready early, this added a couple of hours onto the first day of our break. Have stayed with numerous cottage sites in the past and never experienced this!

We stayed in Coniston in September '23 in the Bowmanstead Cottage by the side of The Ship. The cottage was idyllic and well maintained, with low beams and real log fire. We have used the Coppermines since the year 2000 and we have strongly recommended them to others for the quality of cottages they deal with, we return regularly to Coniston where we are currently booking now for September '24.

We love the cottage location and also find it a home from home. Generally very clean on arrival, warm and cosy. Good water pressure and hot water on demand.
