When planning your future Lake District cottage holiday one of the most important things to think about is food! Fortunately, one thing that the Lake District is known for, apart from the amazing scenery, cosy cottages, and beautiful lakes, is its food. There are plenty of high-quality restaurants serving local fayre and offering memorable dining experiences.

Here we look at the top Michelin starred restaurants you can find across the region and they will be ready and waiting for you as soon as Covid regulations allow them to open again.

Rogan & Co

Cartmel is a beautiful village in the heart of the Lake District and Rogan & Co is one of the most popular restaurants there. With succulent delights such as guinea hen and poached hake, the menu is varied and exciting. Run by chef Simon Rogan, food is sourced from local farms.

Rogan & Co earned its first Michelin star in 2018 and is generally very busy so booking well in advance is a good idea.

L’Enclume

Cartmel is home to no less than two high-class restaurants. L’Enclume is a separate venture by Simon Rogan and has two Michelin stars to its name. The restaurant is located on the riverside and has some amazing views as well as locally sourced, seasonal dishes that will get your mouth watering from the moment you sit down.

The Forest Side

Head to Grasmere and you’ll find hotel and restaurant The Forest Side which has some wonderful views of the local countryside, especially during the winter. Many of the seasonal vegetables are grown on-site or sourced from local producers and the menu includes delights such as deer, lobster and succulent vegetarian options.

If you’re searching for unusual foods and excellent wines, this Victorian mansion, hidden away in the forest, is a perfect choice.

Allium

You’ll find Allium on the border of the Lake District, part of the Lowther estate and located in Askham Hall. This is not just a fine restaurant, however, but comes with almost 800 years of history etched within its walls.

Whether you’re trying the turbot with truffle or a beef fillet with Brunswick cabbage, this is a fine dining experience you’ll never forget.

The Old Stamp House

With a strong connection to poet William Wordsworth, The Old Stamp House is a small, intimate restaurant located in the heart of the Lake District. The team here focus on Cumbrian dishes such as black pudding, wolf beer bread and poached trout, served in stylish surroundings with plenty of atmosphere.

Cottage in the Wood

Located in Whinlater, Cottage in the Wood is more your traditional eatery with lots of local fayre on offer. The restaurant is run by award-winning chef Ben Wilkinson and includes new takes on wild sea bass, succulent duck dishes and locally sourced cheeses.

The surrounding woodland also adds plenty of atmosphere, making it one of the most popular restaurants in the Lake District.

HRiSHi

Finally, if you’re looking for a lively restaurant where local ingredients meet the aromas of Asian spices, you will certainly want to book a table at HRiSHi in Bowness-on-Windermere.

Run by chef Hrishikesh Desai as part of the Gilpin Guest House, dishes such as Shetland Turbot and imaginative and tasty plant-based options such as Singapore crispy tofu, means there’s something for everyone here.
