Attractions Less Travelled in the Lake District

The Lake District is a beautiful place that attracts many tourists each year, and there are some major attractions that many of them flock to. If you are looking for something a little more authentic, and a little less busy then these attractions should fit the bill.

Brantwood House

Close to The Coppermines base in Coniston is Brantwood House. Victorian art critic John Ruskin is Brantwood’s most famous householder and his essence still lives on in the quirky collections still housed here, now a museum dedicated to his art style and self. Brantwood was built in the 18th century and looks over its own lovely gardens and Coniston water. It is a lovely place to visit with ever changing collections, or you can choose to join in one of their events such as watercolour workshops or craft fairs.

The Makers Mill

If you come to the Lake District to be inspired by the landscape, then a visit to the Makers Mill in Keswick is a great idea. A new trendy mill turned art gallery in the centre of Keswick local artists show their craft and they have workshops all year round.

Fell Foot Park

A National Trust owned stretch of parkland on the shores of Windermere complete with a new watersports centre makes Fell Foot Park a perfect place to run (or paddle) off some energy. 45 acres in total, this is an idyllic spot with lots of space to enjoy a picnic before having a go on a paddleboard. Great walks and very family friendly, they have pizza nights in the summer months and in the winter, this is a great spot for sledging!

Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre

For those who love to stargaze, this is the place to visit. Officially named as a Dark Sky Discovery Site Low Gillerthwaite offers lots of stargazing events with talks from experts and telescopes that you can look through.

Stanley Ghyll Force

A 60ft waterfall is the reward for hiking 2.5 miles from Boot train station. You can get the very charming Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway to the station before heading to the waterfall for some spectacular views.

The Lakes Distillery

A new distillery (it opened in 2014) that distils gin, whisky and vodka using local Lake District produce. The distillery is a great stop as it runs tours and tastings and even has a restaurant on site.

Windermere Jetty Museum

A modern museum housing the history of boats on the edge of Windermere. An impressive collection of boats, and a boat load of history is included in this architecturally stunning museum, and the café is defiantly worth a stop as the views across Windermere are lovely!
