Cumbrian Cottages Best Boat Trips in the Lake District Blog Image

Our customers come back to the Coppermines lake District Cottages again and again because of the great range of cottages we offer and our unrivalled local service, but they also come because, for many of them their favourite thing to do is get out on the local lakes and explore by boat!

All of our Lake District Cottages are nestled in and around Coniston, with Coniston Water being one of the most beautiful places to get out on a boat we thought we would take a look at some of the best boat trips in the Lake District.

The ones selected here are loved by locals and visitors alike and are based around the South Lakes, all within easy reach of all of our Lakeland Cottages.

Lake District Boat Trips

Getting out on the lakes, meres and waters of the lake district is one of the reasons this beautiful area is so popular. Seeing the mountains from the centre of the lake is a truly special experience and there are a great many boating ways to get out there and explore – here are a few of our favourites:

Historic Steam Yacht Gondola – Probably the oldest and most historic boat still doing tours on Coniston is the Steam Yacht Gondola. Owned and operated by the National Trust (but not included in its membership fee) and running regularly, this stunning historic boat gives tours and transport across the lake and is still steam powered! Also available to hire privately this Victorian rebuilt steam yacht gives a bygone look at how the Victorians would have enjoyed the lake. The Gondola also offers experience days for those who are interested in learning more about this fascinating boat.

Windermere Lake Cruises – The biggest lake cruise operation in the Lake District. Cruise across England’s largest lake and choose one of the many routes and fares available by this well-established company. Whether you want to simply cruise from the top of Windermere to the bottom enjoying the scenery, or whether you want to hop on and off and explore the shoreline, these regular as clockwork cruises are the perfect way to get out on the water. Combination tickets are also offered for other local close by attractions such as the World of Beatrix Potter and Haverthwaite steam train.

Sail & Dine Windermere – If you are looking for a unique dining experience then choose to enjoy lunch or an evening meal on a yacht on Windermere. You can get as involved as you want in sailing or just sit back and relax and enjoy the sail.

Hire a Motor Boat – Across many of the lakes in Lakeland including Coniston and Windermere you will find Motorboat hire. This is a great way for you and your family to explore the lakes at your own pace and with your own group. You are in control of the boat, and you can travel where and when you please.

Row Your Own – The classic lake district water adventure, a rowing boat. Channel your inner Arthur Ransome and head out on the lake in a classic rowing boat. Human powered and close to the water, there are few better ways to tour the lake. There is often enough space for a picnic basket too!

Boating Experiences Lake District

There are of course many other ways to get out on the lake including the very popular paddleboards, traditional canoes or kayaks, a fishing trip or even a sailing lesson but the quick list above shows the versatility and availability of some of the best boating experiences for visitors in the Lake District.
