Castles to visit in the Lake District

 

The Lake District is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. There are also many spectacular castles located in and around the lakes, displaying impressive history and charm. If you are taking a trip to the Lakes, and staying in a holiday cottage, make sure you visit and enjoy a day exploring these locations.

1.Wray Castle

Wray Castle is situated on a stunning National Trust site, on the edge of Lake Windermere. This is a must visit location, as the grounds are open all year round and is perfect to explore both during the winter and summer. Wray Castle was built in the 19th century, and displays a gothic design, making this castle one of Cumbria’s most popular attractions. Boat trips are available for visitors to take a trip across the lake, and land on the castle’s jetty, making it a trip to remember. Wray Castle is stunning and should not be missed.

2. Lowther Castle and Gardens

Lowther Castle and Gardens is a beautiful award-winning visitor attraction. There is something for everyone, from beautiful garden walks, to historic ruins, and one of the UK’s largest adventure playgrounds. Children and adults can find hours of entertainment at this beautiful location. The castle and gardens were originally built in the 17th century, however, have been restored and cared for in recent years. The attraction should not be missed, as promises to provide you with memories you’ll treasure forever.

3. Brougham Castle

Brougham Castle is set in the most striking location, alongside the banks of the River Eamont. The castle allows you to take in the most beautiful views over the Eden Valley. The impressive castle has endured numerous battles since the 13th century and is certainly worth a visit. The castle sits on an English Heritage site, and has an onsite shop selling snacks and ice cream, allowing for the perfect day trip. Why not take a trip and enjoy a picnic in the grounds of this historic castle?

4. Kendal Castle

Kendal Castle is a historic castle, which was built in the early 1200’s. The castle now boasts stunning and intriguing ruins, with multiple staircases and passages to explore. The site also has computerised displays, showing the reconstructions of the castle, and all of its history throughout the years. There are also various activities for children to enjoy such as coin rubbings and drawings. Kendal Castle is a great location to take a picnic to and enjoy a walk around the site, whilst enjoy the breath-taking panoramic views.

5. Sizergh Castle

Sizergh castle is on the outsides of Kendal and has been occupied by the Strickland family for the last 750 years. This castle has many stories to tell, through its family portraits and beautiful décor. Sizergh sits on wonderful grounds and has lots of different walking trials, including an ancient woodland route and wild play trials for children to enjoy.
