Celebrating Autumn in the Lake District

When the leaves change, the whole of the Lake District takes on a golden glow, and it is easy to see that Autumn has arrived. Autumn breaks in the Lake District are special, the busy summer traffic has gone and there is a soft hush as the leaves fall inviting you to explore new experiences you would not have discovered at any other time of year.

Many of the activities in the Lake District are year-round outdoor activities, but some are just lovely when done in Autumn. Here are a few activities which love the Autumn season.

Autumn Walks – Going walking in the Lake District in Autumn is a completely different experience to any other time of year, there is more colour and more life on show in this season than any other. Walking down a path kicking up soft brown leaves and finding conkers and acorns on the ground are simple pleasures that everyone can enjoy.

Autumn Foraging – If you have never tried foraging, then the Autumn is a great time to explore this, there are many experts, experiences and tours that help you identify edible items in hedgerows and discover mushrooms and other great plants that make a delicious meal.

Seasonal Mindfulness- Mindfulness is such an important part of our mental health and Autumn is a great time to explore this in the Lake District. Mindfulness walks, forest bathing and yoga retreats are all on offer throughout the season, Autumn is a great time to stop and reflect after a busy summer and find yourself again in this gorgeous landscape.

Autumn Water Adventures – Water activities are still available in Autumn, with often warm, bright September days perfect for wild swimming, learning to sail or getting back on that paddleboard! Make the most of getting out on the water before the winter chill sets in.

Autumn Events Lake District

There is also lots going on in the Lake District in Autumn, with Halloween and October half term falling in this season, there is lots to do for all the family.

Halloween Lake District – A spooky but fun time for all the family. Many of the main attractions in the Lake District offer family activities such as Brockhole and many of the National Trust sites. You can choose to take part in these or simply have your own spooky party in your Lake District cottage, this is a perfect option if you have teens as you can make some spooky food, watch scary movies and enjoy spending quality time together as a family.

Bonfire Night – A classic event that many people look forward to every year. Many local communities put on bonfire night activities, often raising money for local charities. Fireworks and a bonfire along with hot food and drink are common and so much fun for all.

Autumn Half Term Holidays – October half term school holidays fall in the middle of Autumn, and it is a great time to get away for a week with the family and enjoy the outdoors before the winter draws in.
