Coniston Staycation Tips

Small enough to be relaxing with enough going on to still be exciting, Coniston is a great place to make your base for your next Lake District staycation. A small village with a big history Coniston is a great place for walkers, families, water sports fans, and history buffs.

Visiting Coniston

Coniston is a lovely Lake District village, based around Coniston water with the dramatic Old Man of Coniston watching over the village. Shops, pubs and a great range of cottage accommodation makes this a perfect base for your Lake District staycation. You can see a full range of great Coniston Holiday Cottages here: https://www.coppermines.co.uk/

Be Inspired by Adventure

Although it is a small village in the Lake District surrounded by spectacular countryside, Coniston has been and continues to be a place to find adventure. Arthur Ransome based his popular Swallows & Amazons book on locations dotted around Coniston, so if you are looking to recreate adventures for your family follow in his characters footsteps and explore Coniston water on your own boat.

Coniston Staycation

If you love risk takers and speed records then investigating Coniston’s past as the home of the Bluebird and where Donald Campbell broke the water speed record in 1955 and was sadly killed in an attempt to regain the title in 1967 is a great thing to do. There is lots of information at the Ruskin museum about Donald himself and the Bluebird along with a memorial in the Village Green, there is even a replica of the Bluebird in the close by Lakeland Motor Museum.

Today there are lots of opportunities for adventure both on and off the water, (speed records, are sadly, a thing of the past, although racing against your family in a canoe would still be allowed!) there are lots of activity providers offering everything from bush craft to sailing, and lots of walks and climbs to discover right from the village centre.

Arts, Crafts, Boats and Beauty

For those who love arts and craft, the Ruskin museum is on Coniston’s doorstep, today a vibrant centre for the arts with lots of classes, courses, and exhibitions throughout the year. Once owned by John Ruskin himself, the house still has many of his possessions from when he lived there, giving the home a truly authentic feel. A café with lovely views completes this popular place.

If you like the feeling of another era and want to experience that in Coniston then the Steam yacht Gondola, run by the National Trust is a must-see attraction. Steam powered travel across the lake, with hop on and hop off points along the way, let visitors see the beauty of the lake as the Victorians would have in this restored gondola.
