Our Mountain Venue

A memorable wedding starts with a memorable location...

Finalist 'Wedding Venue of the Year' 2017 Cumbria Tourism Awards!

Situated in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site

With magnificent views to the Coniston mountains above and Coniston Water in the valley below, The Coppermines Mountain Cottages are our unique and exclusive venue, perfect for a wedding or celebration and are licensed for civil ceremonies.

Set amongst bubbling becks, waterfalls and rugged crags, the valley unfolds before your eyes as you look out of the front door. Look left and you will be graced with the rolling Yewdale crags and to the right, The Old Man of Coniston rising 2000ft into the Lakeland skyline.

There is something magical about sitting out and celebrating with your guests during the warmer days and lighter nights, however given the unique setting the Coppermines valley it is a beautiful backdrop whatever the season. The summer months are, as expected, always the most popular so please check availability in advance.

Our prices vary throughout the year, and it is possible to book just a 3 night weekend, a 4 night midweek break or a full week from a Friday or Monday.

The Venue

Restored from the original Victorian sawmill, the venue features four warm and welcoming cottages which interlink to form one large house, sleeping up to 22 people. There’s four reception rooms, 10 en-suite bedrooms and even four outdoor hot tubs for your private use.

There is also a smaller cottage 500 yards away which would be the ideal cosy hideaway for you and your partner once the celebrations have ceased.

From your arrival the venue is exclusively yours and you have the freedom to decide how you wish your celebration to unfold. There are just a few rules we ask you to follow but there are no set timetables and your occasion can be as unique as desired. We can guarantee that no two weddings held at The Coppermines are ever the same.

The properties are traditional Lakeland cottages and are therefore fairly compact, but all are charming with exposed beams, stone walls, log fires and contemporary oak and leather furniture throughout.

There is also a large level area lying alongside the cottages which can accommodate various sizes of marquee or tipi can be accessed directly from our reception rooms. We personally recommend our marquee providers Evans Marquees of Lancaster and our tipi providers Fjell Tipis of Keswick as exclusive providers due to their reliability and expert knowledge on the site.

A wedding marquee at The Coppermines has a fantastic atmosphere and is a wonderful place to celebrate, dine and dance the night away. The largest marquee that can be sited can seat around 250 people for a wedding breakfast and host up to 300 people ‘buffet style’ for an evening reception. We advise that all events at the Coppermines held in marquees/tipis should have a separate, smaller catering section included, giving your chosen outside catering company a designated workspace away from the main buildings/wedding party.

All essential services are available in the adjoining cottages, including a disabled toilet at ground level, but our cottage kitchens are essentially for the use of the small number of cottage residents.

There is also parking available on site for 50+ cars, with adequate space for manoeuvring.

The Ceremony

We are licensed to hold civil marriage ceremonies in one of the larger reception rooms, found in the Sawyers Cottage.

The room can comfortably hold 50 people seated. Other guests are able to view the ceremony from outside through the wide entrance double doors to this cottage, and can utilise an extra pagoda marquee.

After viewing the cottages, to make arrangements for a civil partnership, initially you should contact the registration service on 0300 303 2472 & press option 2 for the south Cumbria registration service in Kendal.

Alternatively if you are looking for a traditional church wedding then there is the beautiful St Andrews Anglican Church in Coniston, along with a Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and Coniston Methodist Church.

The Perfect Time

There is something magical about sitting out and celebrating with your guests during the warmer days and light nights, however given the unique setting the Coppermines valley offers a beautiful backdrop whatever the season. The summer months are as expected always the most popular so please check availability in advance.
