It may not come as a surprise to many that the Lake District is classed as the UK’s number 1 visitor destination (hooray). Year after year, new and returning visitors are wowed by its stunning scenery, vibrant villages and incredible calendar of events.

This summer is no exception, there are a whole host of family friendly activities and events taking place over the school holiday period. So should you be looking for something to entertain the whole family while you’re here, look no look further as we present our round up of the best family friendly events taking place over the season.

The Beatrix Potter Musical Adventure – 10th June – 3rd September

Exploding with life, music, special effects, dance and show-stopping songs, this musical tale stars Beatrix Potter as the story teller alongside some of her favourite characters.

Coniston Country Fair – 22nd July

Set in a stunning setting on the shores of Coniston Water, Coniston Country Fair is a traditional Lakeland Show offering visitors an enthralling insight into traditional Cumbrian Life.

Outdoor Theatre ‘Merchant of Venice’ by Illyria – 24th July

Held in the tranquil setting of Brantwood’s lakeside meadow overlooking Coniston Water and the Coniston Fells, this special performance is not to be missed. Bring your own seating, picnic blanket and treats and make an evening of it.

Ambleside Traditional Lakeland Sports – 26th July

A traditional Lakeland sports day, with 5hrs of sports! Plenty to keep the whole family entertained. You could also have an amble around the shops and cafes of Ambleside before heading home.

Cumbria Steam Gathering – 28th & 29th July

This year’s Steam Gathering will again consist of a huge selection of machines and artefacts representing all aspects of preservation and restoration.There’s also food stalls and a fair ground for the little ones.

Muncaster Picnic Cinema – 10th & 11th August

Lowther Show – 12th & 13h August

Taking place within the beautiful grounds of Lowther Castle, this year’s Lowther Show will bring to you a full line-up of activity, which will include the Lowther Horse Carriage Driving Trials, Taste Cumbria Food & Beer Festival, the Lowther Fishing Island and the Lowther Hound Show.

Lakeland Country Fair – 19th August

A fantastic traditional Lakeland country fair, including a fell race up the Old Man of Coniston. Fun for all the family.
