Get that Festive Feeling in The Lakes this winter
Get that Festive Feeling in The Lakes this winter
By Rachael Parkin
Whether you get that “festive feeling” by warming your feet on a roaring log fire, by Christmas shopping in quaint market towns and villages or by embarking on an exhilarating walk up a snow-capped mountain there will be something for you here in The Lake District this festive season.
The season gets underway with Ulverston Dickensian Festival, this year taking place on 24th and 25th November. A charming family event with a Christmas Market, street entertainment, children’s rides including a Victoria Helter-Skelter, period costume competition and Santa himself. Join in by dressing as your favourite Dickensian character or simply soak up the atmosphere and enjoy some of the varied street food on offer.
There is more potential for Christmas shopping at Hawkshead Christmas Fair on 1st and 2nd December where there will be markets, a lantern parade, live music, and street performances. Whilst there will be ample opportunities to put your festive taste buds into practice at Cartmel Christmas Food Market on Friday 16th December and at Taste Cumbria Christmas Market on Sat 8th and Sun 9th December. Soak up the sights (and smells) at this festive food fair, held at Cockermouth. Feast on hot food to eat on the spot or stock up your festive larder from one of the many stalls within the marquees.
If you’re visiting the Lakes with children this season then there is plenty of Christmas magic to be found. Hop aboard a Santa Special at Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (booking essential) or meet Santa in the winter wonderland at Hayes Garden World from Saturday 3rd November. Your “little elves” can also join Father Christmas for a Tea Party at The World of Beatrix Potter from 15th December or set sail on a “Santa Cruise” with Ullswater Steamers on 16th December.
And if all the festivities have worn you out you can relax, recharge and refuel in one of the area’s many cosy pubs or simply put your feet up in front of a glowing fire within one of our many characterful cottages.
We have 90 unique self-catering cottages available. There are properties to suit everyone, from couples wanting to cosy up in front of a real fire, to large families looking to make Christmas memories and for those wanting to share the celebrations with their four-legged furry friends.
There are even a few cottages still available for breaks over the Christmas and New Year period – perfect for get-togethers or those looking for a secluded hideaway. And what’s more, to ensure you feel fully in the festive spirit, all our cottages come complete with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.
