Coniston is probably one of the most famous landmarks in the Lake District and is visited by millions of people each year, especially for adventure activities. While some people like to go for relaxing walks around this huge body of water, others are searching for something a little more adventurous.

The good news is that Coniston Water and the surrounding area has lots of different things to do. If you love to climb and challenge yourself, an adventure activity is literally a stone’s throw away. Fortunately, there are a great range of holiday cottages available in and around Coniston making getting to these adventurous activities quick and easy.

Extreme Scrambling

Extreme scrambling has been growing in popularity across age groups in recent years. It involves going a little off the beaten track, climbing up rock faces and wading through rivers in gullies. These activities are usually organised by local businesses and involve visiting local ghylls, narrow valleys or ravines that are found everywhere in the Lake District.

These activities can be quite demanding, and you need to wear the right protective gear and be properly supervised. One of the best locations is Boot which is just to the south of Scafell Pike and to the east of Coniston Water.

Ziplines and Treetop Trekking

Another bunch of activities that have become popular across the region are zip-lining and treetop trekking. A zipline is a wire that stretches high across a section of ground. People hook up to it and fly across the treetops, lakes and other landscapes.

Treetop trekking requires a bit more effort and there are plenty of locations such as Grizedale Forest where you’ll find high rope challenges. If you are looking for exhilaration, you won’t be disappointed.

Water Sports on Coniston

Coniston Water is about five miles long and half a mile wide. At its maximum, the water is 184 feet deep. As you might expect, during the spring, summer and autumn, there are plenty of activities going on in the area. If you love canoeing or kayaking, paddle boarding or water skiing, there’s probably no better location.

It’s not all water-bound activities, however. Around the lake, there are numerous opportunities to test your metal, including rappelling from rock faces, extreme walking/hiking and the more traditional bike trailing. You might see the odd intrepid individual hang gliding in the distance.

Canyoning & Gorge Scrambling

These are true adventure activities anyone undertaking these activities should be accompanied by an experienced guide. Gorge scrambling is just what it sounds like; its scrambling up and round gorges. Canyoning is a mix of gorge scrambling and jumping off waterfalls. If you are looking for an adrenaline rush Canyoning is for you. There are providers of these adventure activities in the Coniston area.

Bushcraft Near Coniston

Bushcraft experiences are becoming more and more popular in the Lake District and there are a number of activity providers in and around Coniston who offer half and full day bushcraft adventures for those who want to get back to basics.

Paintballing in Coniston

Not far from Coniston water, at Torver, is a paintball site. Perfect for having so much fun with your family or a group of friends. Located in and around an old railway track there are plenty of woodland coverage for many paintball games.
