Great National Trust Properties to Visit on Your Lake District Cottage Holiday
If you’ve decided to rent out an amazing holiday cottage in the Lake District, there’s so much to do and see when you arrive it can be challenging to fit it all in. For those searching for inspiration and a little history, there are some fantastic National Trust properties across the region, and many on your doorstep when you book a Coppermines Cottage for your Lake District holiday.
Making your base in a Cottage in and around Coniston ensures you don’t have to drive far to find some of the most popular Lake District Properties that will let you explore the history and culture of this World Heritage Site. Coniston is even home to The Steam Yacht Gondola, this is a rebuilt Victorian steam powered passenger boat, run by the National Trust, giving a real insight into the Victorian hey days of the past and a great way to tour the lake.
Hilltop House in Near Sawrey
Beatrix Potter is one of the more famous people to have lived in the Lake District and Hilltop in Near Sawrey was her home. She purchased the 16th-century property from the proceeds of her first book and it has been looked after by the National Trust since her death.
The garden at Hilltop is an explosion of spectacular colour during spring and summer and it is amazing to see where Beatrix Potter wrote some of her most loved and enduring works.
Townend in Troutbeck
Stepping back in time, Townend is a great National Trust property to visit for an hour or two. Built way back in 1626 it gives visitors a snapshot of life for the Browne family during that 15th century.
This is an amazing slice of local history you’ll love. There are guided tours available and cookery demonstrations in the farmhouse kitchen and, once you’ve explored the house, the gardens are a great way to finish off a relaxing afternoon.
Sizergh Castle in Kendal
Kendal is a popular location for holidaymakers in the Lake District and another place you’ll want to visit is Sizergh Castle. If you love the intricate wood panelling designs of Elizabethan England and a little decadence to with it, this should tick all the boxes. With its open grounds, the castle is almost magical during the winter months and there’s also a brilliant tearoom and farm shop so you can gather some Lake District produce before heading home to your holiday cottage.
Wray Castle, Ambleside
The Lakes are one of the big attractions in the region and Windermere is exceptional. Nestled on the water’s edge you will find Wray Castle. Built during the 1830s, it was regularly rented by Beatrix Potter and her family for their holidays. The view of the lake is magnificent, and the grounds are an excellent place for a picnic.
Allan Bank in Grasmere Another place to visit for a picnic over the summer is Allan Bank in the village of Grasmere. The views are commanding here which makes it no surprise this location was an inspiration for the poet Wordsworth. Allan Bank is suitable for all the family to visit and there are interesting nature trails organised throughout the summer where you’ll see a few red squirrels scampering about. It’s also a brilliant place in the evening if you love stargazing.
