The Lake District is one of the most amazing places to visit on vacation, whether you live here or are visiting from abroad. Like most places in the UK, however, the weather cannot always be guaranteed. The good news is that when the rain does start to come down, there are plenty of indoor adventures to take advantage of.

Indoor Lake District Adventures

Here we look at some of the activities you can add to your itinerary list when you’re faced with some inclement weather.

Cruise on a Lake – You don’t have to stay stuck indoors in your holiday cottage or hotel when the rain starts to come down. During the spring, summer, and autumn, most of the larger lakes, including Windermere, have cruises running all throughout the day.

These are a great way to see the surrounding countryside while staying undercover. The Windermere cruises, for example, stop at various locations around the lake, including the historic Wray Castle which is another great place to visit during bad weather.

Wray Castle – Especially if you have kids in tow, Wray Castle on the edge of Windermere has some brilliant outdoor activities. If it rains, however, you can quickly head indoors and explore all the different rooms.

Each section hosts a range of different activities including the chance for the kids to dress up in different outfits and indulge in some creative arts and crafts. If you’re feeling peckish, there’s also an amazing café that serves amazing cakes and sandwiches.

Visit an Aquarium – Another wonderful place to keep in mind, even if it’s not raining, is the Lakes Aquarium. It’s a highly popular attraction suitable for all the family. From funky otters and prehistoric reptiles to the odd piranha or two, you’ll find animals and fish from all over the world here.

Situated on the edge of Windermere, this is a busy venue all through the year and will certainly help you keep the kids entertained on a wet afternoon.

Visit a Museum – You might not be focused on visiting museums when you’re out in the fresh air enjoying the countryside in and around the Lake District. There are quite a few you can add to your list of rainy-day options when you visit.

If cars and transport are your things, for instance, the Lakeside Motor Museum is certainly worth a visit and has a wide range of vintage cars and motorbikes. There’s also an exhibition devoted to Sir Donald Campbell that includes replicas of the Bluebird boat that attempted to set a new world water speed record in the 50s and 60s.

Visit Beatrix Potter’s Home – If your kids are young and fans of Beatrix Potter, a visit to Bowness on Windermere is essential, whatever the weather. The World of Beatrix Potter is a magical attraction that brings all the brilliant stories to life. From Squirrel Nutkin and Mrs Tiggy-Winkel to Peter Rabbit, all your favourites are here.

There are many more indoor attractions in and around the Lake District you can take advantage of. Whether you love a sporting activity like swimming or wall climbing or simply want to wander through an amazing museum, indulge your love for arts and crafts or visit spectacular fictional worlds, there’s something for everyone here.
