With the autumn half-term approaching faster than we think, the Lake District is an ideal destination for families seeking adventure and relaxation.

Staying in a cosy Lake District cottage offers the perfect base for exploring the region’s top attractions. Are there’s plenty to do and see once you’re settled in. Here are some of our favourites:

Brockhole on Windermere Adventure Playground

Brockhole on Windermere offers an exciting day out for families. Set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Windermere, the adventure playground is a favourite with children of all ages.

With slides, swings, and climbing frames, it provides hours of entertainment. For the more adventurous, there are zip lines and treetop adventures that give children a chance to immerse themselves in the great outdoors. Parents can enjoy a coffee at the nearby café while taking in the beautiful views of the lake.

Grizedale Forest

Grizedale Forest is a must-visit for those who enjoy a mix of outdoor activity and art. Nestled between Coniston Water and Windermere, the forest offers walking and cycling trails suitable for all ages and abilities.

Families can explore the stunning woodland while hunting for the unique sculptures hidden along the paths. The Go Ape adventure course is another exciting option, with tree-top walkways and other thrilling challenges. For a quieter afternoon, you can simply enjoy the tranquillity of the forest while keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Alpacaly Ever After

If your family loves animals, Alpacaly Ever After offers a delightful experience. Located near Keswick, this unique attraction allows visitors to meet and walk with alpacas.

Families can book a guided walk, where children will enjoy leading their friendly alpaca through the beautiful Lakeland countryside. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children to connect with these gentle animals and learn more about them.

Lakes Aquarium

Located on the southern shore of Windermere, the Lakes Aquarium provides a fascinating journey into the aquatic world of the Lake District and beyond.

Families can explore the diverse range of species, from local freshwater fish to more exotic creatures. The underwater tunnel is a particular highlight, allowing visitors to get up close to marine life as it swims overhead. Interactive displays make this an engaging experience for children, while the café offers refreshments with views of the lake.

Fish and Chip Trains, Ravenglass

The Fish and Chip Trains in Ravenglass offer a memorable experience for families. Starting at Ravenglass station, the train journey takes you through the beautiful Eskdale valley on a heritage train.

The ticket includes a return train ride, as well as a classic fish and chip supper with mushy peas, served onboard. It’s a relaxed and fun way to enjoy the stunning autumn scenery while indulging in a traditional British meal. Be sure to book in advance, as these special trains are very popular during half-term.

Apple Tasting Weekends, Penrith

Finally, autumn in the Lake District wouldn’t be complete without celebrating the season’s bounty, and Penrith’s Apple Tasting Weekends offer just that. Running throughout October, this event showcases over 175 varieties of apples, with opportunities to taste and purchase your favourites.

It’s an ideal family activity, especially for those staying in nearby cottages. Children will enjoy sampling the different flavours, and parents can learn more about the local apple-growing tradition.
