Love the Lakes for Longer – our Conservation Area

Here at the Coppermines & Lakes Cottages we are passionate about all things Lake District. We are committed to preserving the landscape for all to enjoy, for generations to come. That is why we have been busily working to rewild Foul Scrow fell in Coniston.

What is rewilding?

Rewilding activities are conservation efforts aimed at restoring and protecting wilderness areas and natural processes.

How are we rewilding?

We’re planting trees, and lots of them! To date, we’ve planted over 4000 saplings in our Conservation Area. 1000 of those trees were very kindly donated by The Woodland Trust.

We’re appealing to as many wildlife species as possible by planting a host of different varieties of trees, some of which are fruit-bearing. So far, we have planted;

  • Common oak
  • Rowan
  • Goat willow
  • Common alder
  • Crab apple
  • Aspen
  • Elder
  • Bird cherry
  • Salix aurita
  • Wild pear
  • Hazel
  • Quickthorn

Our Conservation Area on Foul Scrow has been fenced off to livestock so the Herdwicks can’t get at the young trees being planted on the land. Herdwicks are notoriously peckish, and will eat any vegetation in their path, so please let us know if you spot any naughty sheep grazing on the Scrow!

We love to share the Lakes with you and we hope to see you enjoying the benefits of rewilding Foul Scrow on your next visit to Coniston.
