Half term can be a nightmare if you need to find something to keep the kids busy. Planning some time away and exploring new adventures is one option. If you love magnificent scenery with plenty to do and see, the Lake District is the perfect location to book a break for all the family this October.

October Half Term Lake District Cottages

Not only can you explore brand-new landscapes and get some fresh air in your kid’s lungs, but you can also keep them off their smartphones and have a healthy holiday at the same time. Having a Lake District Cottage as your base for October adventures is the best way to get involved with everything the Lake District has to offer at half term!

Here are just some of the adventure activities that you can get involved with across the region:

Autumn Nature Trails

Attractions that the Lake District has in plentiful supply are walks and nature trails. With the autumn leaves and some spectacular views, there’s something for kids of all ages. Langdale is probably one of the most diverse places to visit and amazing climbs such as Blea Tarn offer fantastic vistas and aren’t that difficult to traverse, even for smaller kids.

Go to the more remote locations in the Lake District and you may see the odd red deer (especially at sunset), squirrels, otters, and badgers. Keep your eyes peeled on the sky too because there are a whole range of birds of prey including, if you’re lucky, the odd golden eagle or two.

Halloween Spookiness at Brockhole

Of course, October is usually associated with Halloween and there are generally some activities going on for all the kids. To the east of Lake Windermere is Brockhole, a gorgeous Lake district visitor centre, that runs a range of events during the half-term period including graveyard golf and workshops for budding witches.

If you fancy something more, the local World of Beatrix Potter has fancy dress events during this time as well.

Cycle Rides and Mountain Bike Trails

One way to burn off some energy and have some fun at the same time is to get on your bike. Whether it’s a leisurely ride along country lanes or a more intensive mountain bike trail, you can hire your two wheels locally or bring your own strapped to the back of the car.

If you’re looking for something beginners can handle, head towards the coast west of Coniston and you’ll find Muncaster Fell. There are plenty of routes around Lake Windermere too. One of these is Claife Heights which has both challenging routes for experienced kids and adults as well as less technical ones.

Adventure Activities

There are a host of adventure activity sites in the Lake District that stay open for the October half term, everything from canoeing and sailing on one of the lakes such as Windermere or Coniston to climbing and scrambling.

If you’re looking for something unusual, head to Honister Slate Mine for some indoor climbing or hit the treetop nets near Brockhole. For those who want something more challenging, a visit to Alston and Ghyll aqua scrambling may be just up your street.

Historic Visits

In addition to adventure, there are also plenty of historic visits around the Lake District for when you just want a rest from the exertion. You’ll find everything from historic houses and gardens to Roman ruins and a whole host of museums and galleries that are perfect for all the family.

Family Cottages Coniston

Having adventures and creating memories in the Lake District with your family over half term is a wonderful thing to do and Coppermines Cottages have a great range of family friendly cottages with everything you need to make a home from home.
