Hundreds of thousands of people come to visit the Lake District each year and booking a holiday cottage is the ideal way to enjoy the local amenities. While the weather can be spectacular, there are some days when you might just to want to hunker down light your log-burner and spend a day cosying up in your Lake District cottage.

Here we look at ways to keep yourself entertained when you don’t feel like heading out into the wet weather, especially if you have kids.

Have a Film Binge

If you have a family in tow, finding things to keep the kids occupied on a rainy day can be challenging. There are plenty of indoor locations in and around the Lake District where you can take part in activities such as wall climbing or visit a nearby aquarium, for example, but you may just want to stay in your cottage if it’s pouring down outside.

One of the easiest activities to organise is a film binge where the family gathers around the TV and watches their favourite movie or a new release. Of course, there are always going to be arguments over which film to watch so making it as democratic as possible can ensure things go a little more smoothly.

Many of our cottages are equipped with smart TV’s and WiFi, so you can hunker down in a cosy blanked on the sofa and watch your favourite shows on Netflix or Disney+

Teach the Kids Some Cooking Skills

While watching a bunch of movies can be fun for one day, you might prefer to get the kids and everyone else staying at the holiday cottage involved in something more physical.

Although it can be messy, organising a cooking day, whether it’s preparing a meal or baking some colourful cakes is a great idea and can help teach the kids some new skills in the process.

All Coppermines Cottages all come with well-equipped kitchens, making baking with the family a fun and delicious way to spend a rainy day.

Getting the Games Out

Bringing some of your favourite board games with you to your Lake District Cottage is always a good idea! These types of activities are great for keeping everyone focused and bringing the family together in a fun way.

Run an Arts and Craft Day

Another great option is to get everyone involved in some sort of arts and craft activity. It’s easy to get a few things together and start the kids painting or drawing or even something messier. Children love creating stuff, everything from cardboard robots to paper kites that they can fly when the weather gets better.

Book a Cottage with Extra Amenities

It’s a good idea to think about the potential for a rainy day on your holiday when you book a cottage and check out what amenities they have on-site. For example, a large cottage means that you have plenty of space to run several rainy-day activities at the same time, particularly useful if there’s an age gap between kids.

A few places even have hot tubs in the garden which are perfect for when you want to relax undercover and is a fun activity for all the family, some have large gardens perfect for running around in the rain, and some are close to the village centre so you can take short walks to local attractions or the local Lake District pub!
