Summer Adventures We Are Looking Forward to in the Lake District
Never has a summer been looked forward to with more anticipation. After a winter of being indoors during lockdown so many of us are looking forward to the fresh air and open space of the Lake District for our family holiday this year.
Adventures come in all shapes and sizes in the Lake District, from gentle walks and exploring historic sites to scrambling up mountains, zipping across zip wires or paddling across lakes. The best way to get the most out of your summer holiday to the Lake District is to book a Lake District Cottage with The Coppermines, our cottages offer a true home from home experience and a great base from which to explore.
If you’re planning a trip to the Lake District in the coming warmer months, the good news is there’s plenty to do and see. You can start planning your summer adventures now and perhaps you’ll want to add the following amazing locations to your list.
Visit Windermere!
One of the most iconic locations in the Lake District, Windermere is popular all through the year. During the summer, however, you can expect a whole bunch of adventures to keep you and the rest of the family entertained.
Not only are there trips on the calm water where you can take in the scenery and relax but there are activities such as paddle boarding, water skiing and canoeing. If you are planning to visit Fell Foot in August, you can also take part in some wild swimming with hundreds of other participants.
Go Ape in Grizedale
Once you travel around the Lake District often enough, you’ll soon begin to realise that there’s so much to visit it’s almost impossible to fit it all in on one vacation. Grizedale is not that far from Coniston and is home to the team at Go Ape the perfect place for burning some serious energy.
This one location gives you the chance to get high up in the treetops or Segway your way around the forest paths. There is also the chance to set up camp, fly down a zip wire, rush through the trees and hills orienteering or take a leisurely horse ride with family and friends.
Spend Time in Ambleside
This town to the north of Windermere is probably one of the most popular locations in the region and the pier is the perfect place to spend a balmy summer afternoon. If waterfalls are your thing, a trek out to Stock Ghyll Force is well worth the effort – it is one of the most photographed parts of the Lake District.
For the more studious among you, there’s the Armitt Museum to explore and even the remains of a Roman fort and bathhouse. Once you’ve finished, you can head to the pier to catch the next boat to see what else Lake Windermere has to offer.
Brilliant HIkes
No visit to the Lake District is worth your time if you don’t take in at least a hike or two. There are fantastic peaks around the region and some real hidden gems where you will find adventures aplenty.
One of these is Orrest Head which gives you great views of the surrounding countryside as well as Lake Windermere in all its majesty, in Coniston the Old Man is a great option with rewarding views from the top. There are hundreds of routes around the Lake District, from the world-famous Scafell Pike to less obvious trails in and around the many Lakes, and many are accessible from the door of your Coppermines Cottage!
Take a Bike Ride
The Lake District has more than its fair share of bike tracks to take advantage of and it’s the perfect way for all the family to explore the region. There are various Bike Fest events held throughout the year which visitors can get involved in and you can even ride some vintage cycles during the Velo Retro which enters its 7th edition this June.
One thing is for certain, there is adventure everywhere you look when visiting the Lake District. Whether you love to climb trees, hike to the highest peak or cycle down country lanes with friends or family, this summer is going to be full of excitement, new experiences and plenty of fun.
