The Rise of the Staycation
The Rise of the Staycation…
Here at the Coppermine we’ve long believed that a Great British Holiday can make for a fantastic, fun-and adventure filled holiday. A “staycation” supports British Tourism whilst making the most of everything our amazing country has to offer.
Below we’ve listed some of our favourite reasons why we believe “holidays at home” are the best!
1. Your dog can come too!
Probably the greatest ever reason for holidaying here in the UK; ALL the family can holiday together, and that includes our four-legged, furry friends. And the Lake District is an exceptionally dog-friendly destination, with pets welcome almost everywhere your feet and paws can take you. The lakes is a veritable doggy playground, with endless opportunities for “walkies” amongst staggering scenery as well as lakes and rivers aplenty for a refreshing dip.
Furthermore, at the Coppermines and Lakes Cottages our canine guests have exclusive and free access to our large dog-field in the village of Coniston, perfect for off-lead exercise and playtime.
2. Freedom to explore – drive your own car on your own side of the road.
On a Great British Holiday even your car can come too! Giving you the ultimate freedom to discover new sights, find new places and explore everything your holiday destination has to offer. The Lake District enjoys some incredible driving routes such as the infamous Wrynose and Hard Knott passes as well as a virtual endless network of country lanes to explore – who knows what new places you’ll discover.
3. No airports. Pick up the kids, pack up the car and you’re on your way!
We offer Friday check-ins – allowing our guests to finish work, gather up loved ones and head off Lake District bound to be relaxing in your very own slice of Lakeland heaven by early evening. No worries, no hassle and no passports required.
4. Not JUST a hotel room – but an entire house to yourself.
A Great British Self-Catering Lake District Cottage Holiday offers you not just one room – but a whole house to yourself. We have a selection of beautiful, hand-picked cottages to suit families of all shapes and sizes, with plenty of room to just be together (and ample space to stay apart!) All our cottages are located within the Lake District National Park and make the perfect base for exploring the lakes as a whole. And if you’re looking for something totally unique you can even stay in one of our Mountain Cottages, enjoying an extraordinary setting within a true mountain environment.
5. Incredible beaches
Yes that’s right, it’s not just stunning mountains and spectacular lakes. Cumbria has amazing beaches too! Miles and miles of them in fact. And what’s more – they’re largely empty! So you are absolutely guaranteed to find space to spread out and relax on a Cumbrian beach, and because of the vast space on offer, they are mostly dog friendly too! So everyone can enjoy at a day on the sand. Plus if you prefer your beaches sand and sea free, the Lakes also boasts stunning lakeside beaches. So if the idea of relaxing waterside, shaded by ancient woodland, and with gentle waves lapping against the shingle shore then the Lakes really is place for you.
6. Eat out, eat in – the choice is yours.
With a Great British self-catering holiday the choice is yours. With fully-equipped kitchens our cottages have everything you need to prepare fabulous family feasts. Don’t fancy cooking? The Lake District is overflowing with pubs, eateries and takeaways, you’ll find something for everyone!

8. Getting out and about
On a Great British Holiday you are not constrained to a resort but are free to get out and about and truly explore your environment. The Lakes has some of the most incredible and yet accessible walking in the country, nay the world! If your boots are made for walking then they will be very at home here in Coniston. Stay in one of our Coniston Cottages and fabulous walking is available from your front door.
9. Friendly locals – Herdwicks, red squirrels and so much more!
One thing you’re certain to see on your Lake District holiday is sheep. Our woolly natives are to be found scattered across the fells throughout Lakeland. Our flocks of Herdwick’s, famous for their characterful faces, are to be seen in abundance within the National Park. But for the eagle eyed visitor there’s also a rich diversity of local wildlife to be spotted including red squirrels, red and roe deer, red kites, ospreys and otters. Cumbria even has its own flourishing seal colony with dolphins and porpoises also to be spotted along its extensive coastline!
10. Great British Luxury
We all enjoy a touch of luxury every now and again. It’s not just swanky oversees hotel that can offer that luxurious holiday. Our beautiful, luxury cottages offer that little bit extra to all those who visit. These exceptional Lake District homes offer stylish interiors, superb views, enviable locations and first class facilities.
