The Tour of Britain is coming (this September)…
It was recently announced that two legends of cycling will be riding through Cumbria next month (how exciting!)
Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas and Giro d’Italia winner Chris Froome will ride together through the county over two consecutive days as part of the Tour of Britain – making it the first time the pair have taken part in an event together for almost ten years.
Thomas has taken part in the event eight times since his debut in 2005, while Froome has taken part twice, in 2007 and again in 2009, which was the last time he and Thomas competed together, in the Barloworld-Bianchi team.
As Team Sky confirms they’ll both be on the start line, we expect keen cyclists will be eager to witness the pair race through the county along a route which includes the stretch along the entire western side of Coniston Water, passing through Hawkshead and the village of Coniston itself on September 7th.
The 6th stage of the event, will cover 169-kilometres from Barrow-in-Furness before heading north through the Lakes towards Whinlatter, passing through Blawith (Middlefield Cottage), Water Yeat (Bee Bole House), Torver (Puzzle Cottage, No.3 Wilsons, High Park Cottage), Coniston village (the home of 57 village cottages) and Hawkshead Hill (Hollin Bank Barn).
Amazingly 175,000 people lined the route when Cumbria last hosted a tage of the event two years ago. Now we have two of the country’s greatest sportsmen passing through the county we expect crowd numbers to rise.
Looking to take in the action? Here at The Coppermines Lakes Cottages we’ve plenty of cottages well placed to give guests easy access to the route, 24 of which have their own bike storage facilities. By booking a stay in one of our cottages, with front row seats just a stone’s throw away, spectators will really be able to soak up the atmosphere, rather than just watching on TV.
Monday 3rd September 7 Nights (enjoy exploring the Lakes before and after the cycling action)
