Things to do in the Lake District this Easter
What’s happening in the Lake District during Easter 2024? Here are some of the events and attractions taking place over the Easter break. With plenty of outdoor adventure as well as rainy day activities, there’s lots to do for the whole family in the Lakes this Easter, come rain or shine.
Visit Bluebird – The Ruskin Musuem, Coniston
Donald Campbell’s iconic Jet Hydroplane Bluebird K7 is finally set to return to Coniston during 2024. Excitingly, the museum has announced that they hope the boat will be back in Coniston by the end of March. So there is every chance that visitors to the Lakes will be able to see the restored Bluebird over the Easter break.
With the uncertainty as to exactly when she will be on public display however, please check the Ruskin’s Museum’s website before planning your visit.
Herdwick Experience – Yew Tree Farm, Coniston
Hug a Herdwick at the unique Herdwick Experience at Yew Tree Farm near Coniston village. Not only do you get to visit the iconic Yew Tree Farm, previously owned by Beatrix Potter and featuring in the film Miss Potter, you can learn all about the famous Herdwick breed, and why they are so significant to the Lake District. You also get to spend time with the herd’s most sociable “woolly ambassadors” with opportunities to get up close to these friendly characters and enjoy a most memorable visit.
Brantwood – Coniston Water
Brantwood home and gardens sits on the eastern side on Coniston. There’s always plenty going on all year round. 23rd March to 19th May the “Reflections on Water”, exhibition by Cumbria Printmakers which explores the elemental force and beauty that is water. April 13th also sees Brantwood hosting a Food & Folk evening, with hearty food with live folk music. Throughout Easter you can take a tour of the historic house once belonging to John Ruskin, take a stroll around the gardens and woodlands and enjoy food on The Terrace café, with one of the best views in the whole of the Lakes.
Go on an Easter Egg Hunt – Brockhole, Windermere
There’s heaps going on at Brockhole throughout the Easter holidays. You can join in the hunt for the missing Golden Bunny as well as enjoying the year-round adventures and activities such as the TreeTop Nets, archery, boat hire, crazy golf, karting and the large adventure playground, guaranteed to tire out even the most energetic family members.
Ride the train
The Ravenglass to Eskdale Railway has to be once the most spectacular and beautiful railway journeys you will ever take. And there’s plenty of Easter themed activities taking place on the iconic La’al Ratty this Easter including Easter eggs to spot en route as well as a host of free children’s activities. For younger children, Millerbeck Light Railway near Newby Bridge and Fellfoot on Windermere, also run Easter themed trains (pre-booking required).
World of Beatrix Potter, Ambleside
There’s Easter Egg hunts and a Peter rabbit tea party taking place at the World of Beatrix Potter in Ambleside over Easter. Perfect for rainy days with your little bunnies, this magical attraction brings to life the timeless charms of Potter’s delightful books.
Theatre by the Lake, Keswick – Little Shop of Horrors
Feed me Seymour! Catch a performance of this cult musical between 27 March and 20th April at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake and prepare for musical, gardening-themed hilarity.
Light up the Hoad – Ulverston
On Saturday 30th March, witness hundreds of people light up a zig-zag path up Hoad Hill all the way to the Sir John Barrow Monument. Tickets £2.50 each or £2.00 for children. While on Easter Sunday 31st March Ponies in the Park at Ford Park, Ulverston at the bottom of Hoad Hill, offers introductory pony rides for children. You can join in the Ulverston tradition of egg rolling down Hoad Hill. Bring your decorated, hard boiled eggs and race them to the bottom!
