Tips for Dealing with the Lake District Weather on your Staycation
Staycations in the UK are amazing, and in the Lake District they are even better but you do have to plan for the British Weather! Here are a few top tips on dealing with different weather conditions on your Lake District staycation.
Shop for Appropriate Clothing
The rain can dampen spirits but if it is not torrential then a good waterproof jacket and some sturdy walking shoes should ensure any rain showers do not spoil your outdoor adventures. If you forgot to pack your raincoat, never fear, in the Lake District you will never be far from an outdoor shop from which you can buy something appropriate. Head to the main tourist hot spots and you will find a range of shops with expert staff able to sell you exactly what you need.
Apply Seasonal Sensibilities
Seasons in the Lake District are full and beautiful, each having its own unique character. The Lake District is a great place for a staycation any time of year so be mindful of the season you are visiting in and pack appropriately for that season.
Sunshine is Possible
You may not hear about it much, but the sun does shine in Cumbria! The Lake District does not always rain and when it is sunny it is glorious! Remember to pack sunscreen, sunglasses and hats and if you are going out walking pack extra water if it is warm – you will need it!
Avoid the Rain Completely
A common phrase in Cumbria is ‘There is no bad weather, just bad clothing’ and while we agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment, sometimes the reality is that the weather is just yucky, or you have had a few rainy days in succession and you just want to avoid it all together. Cottages are perfect for these types of days, watching movies, doing jigsaws, playing board games, reading books, and then heading to the pub or cooking a hearty meal are all great things to do when the weather is bad on your Lake District staycation.
Nice Things to Do in Nasty Weather
If the weather on your staycation is rainy, snowy or simply a bit miserable then there are some things you can plan to do, especially if you are visiting the Lake District in Winter and are expecting some chilly days. Curling up beside a fire with a good book while the wind and rain howl outside the cottage walls sounds like a relaxing afternoon to us! Many of our cottages have fireplaces perfect for these weather conditions and you can being your favourite book with you, pick one up on your travels or borrow one as many cottages have some good reads on their shelves. If you choose a Lake District cottage with a hot tub, then pretty much no weather can spoil the experience of an outdoor hot tub, many say it is even better when it is snowing!
Indoor Attractions are Many and Varied
If the weather has spoiled your outdoor plans, then simply make some new plans as there are lots and lots of things to do on bad weather days. From Museums to movie theatres, indoor climbing walls to swimming pools, historic houses to boats and trains, you will find something interesting to do in the Lake District.
