Where to Find the Best Autumnal Colours in the Lake District
There’s no better place to visit than the Lake District during Autumn. With a vast explosion of colour, from the golden leaves to the deep blue waters and green hills, it’s the most amazing location if you want to recharge your batteries, have some fun and take in the fresh, clean air.
For many people simply looking out of the window of their Lake District holiday cottage is one of the best views of Autumn in the Lakes. Having your morning cup of coffee looking out onto a fell near Coniston or watching the wildlife in the garden of your holiday cottage is one of the best things to do to catch the change of seasons in a relaxing way. The Coppermines Cottages has a unique range of cottages for you to choose from, some on the side of a fell, some by the water and others with picture perfect outside spaces, and some in the centres of towns and villages for you to watch the world go by.
Best Spots for Autumn Colours Lake District
Whether you’re hitting a bike trail, taking a hike, or planning a picnic in the woods, here are some of our favourite places to visit this time of year:
Ullswater – If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of popular lakes like Windermere, heading a little further north to Ullswater is a good option in the Autumn. Stretching for nearly 12 km, the glassy waters are brilliant if you want to pop in a kayak or love to sail – the surrounding countryside at this time of year is stunning with peaks such as Hallin Fell and Arthur’s Pike rising above you.
There are plenty of places to stop and have a picnic beside the shore but there are also some old-style pubs where you can get a home-cooked meal for all the family.
Great Langdale – Just up from Windermere is an area of forest and rocky paths with the perfect walk, through autumn trees all surrounded by pikes and crags and the odd stream and waterfall. It’s certainly one of the gems in the Lake District and there are several different walks you can take advantage of varying degrees of difficulty.
The Langdale Pikes are the best option if you want to have a true appreciation of all those autumn colours below. At just 756m, it may not be the stiffest climb in the Lake District but certainly commands some of the best views. There are, however, five peaks to enjoy so you can spend a whole week exploring the area and never get bored.
Tarn Hows – Just above Coniston Water and west of Windermere, Tarn Hows once belonged to the children’s writer Beatrix Potter and is the perfect place for a gentle walk. If you’re looking to take photos of the autumn trees, early morning or late evening are the best times as the light brings out the true colour and depth of the scenery.
With views of wonderful places like Langdale Pikes, it’s a great place to walk any time of the year but it’s especially magical during the autumn.
