A Visitor’s Guide to Lakeside, Lake District

At the southern tip of Lake Windermere, Lakeside, Cumbria, is a picturesque Lake District destination famous for its direct access to Windermere and nearby visitor attractions. It’s the perfect place to begin your exploration of the region. Whether you’re here to simply enjoy the lake by taking scenic boat rides and gentle walks, or want to try some of the more exciting family attractions, there’s a great choice of things to do at Lakeside.
Lakeside is primarily a visitor hub; it’s not a large residential village. You’ll find a handful of houses, a shop and café, and a few hotels catering mainly to tourists; with the stunning scenery and fun activities, Lakeside has a purpose-built and charming holiday atmosphere.
Where is Lakeside?
When planning your trip to the Lakes, you’ll want to know how to get to Lakeside. It’s positioned right on the edge of the national park, and one of Lakeside’s most appealing aspects is its easy access, and we’re not just talking about its proximity to the lake. If arriving by car, it’s one of the fastest and most direct journeys to the Lake District. And even arriving by boat or rail is relatively simple compared with some other Lake District destinations.
By car, the main route is from the M6 motorway: leave at junction 36 and follow the A590 west towards Barrow-in-Furness. After passing through Newby Bridge, you’ll see signs for Lakeside – the road ends at the Lakeside car park, Windermere, just a short stroll from the pier, aquarium, and railway station.
By rail, there’s no direct mainline service to the Lakeside station itself. Instead, travellers can take a mainline train to Ulverston, Grange-Over-Sands, or Oxenholme (Lake District). From Grange-Over-Sands and Ulverston, you’ll need to get a taxi to Haverthwaite Station or your holiday accommodation. From Oxenholme, you can get a connection to Windermere Station, where you’ll need to get a bus or taxi to Bowness before you can transfer onto a Lakeside-Bowness ferry for the final scenic leg.
Mentioned above, another popular option is to travel from Haverthwaite Station on the heritage Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway, where you can board the Lakeside steam train for the short, picturesque journey into Lakeside. It’s located just off the A590 between Newby Bridge and Ulverston, with clear brown tourist signs for the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. There’s a dedicated car park on site. Haverthwaite is a great option for the novelty of arriving in Lakeside by train when you don’t want to take a Lakeside ferry from Bowness or Windermere. It’s also handy for combining with other things to do in Haverthwaite, such as a visit to the nearby Lakeland Motor Museum.
