Well, the good news is you can visit these stunning falls and pools direct from your lodge. The nearest is only a 5 minute walk away. There are several waterfalls and pools for swimming in heading up into Coppermines Valley. There’s a waterfall route map in each of the lodges, so you can enjoy a wild swim in one, or all of them. And if you need warming up after an invigorating dip, then a private hot shower in your shepherd hut awaits close by.
  • Go paddle-boarding on Coniston Water. The famous lake of Coniston Water is only a 15 minute walk away from the shepherd hut lodges. Coniston Boating Centre on the lake shore hires out rowing boats, motor boats, kayaks and paddle-boards. Or, if you prefer to stay dry, then scenic lake cruises are also available including on the National Trust’s Heritage Steam Gondola or via Coniston Launch.
  • Visit Cathedral Cave. Located in the beautiful Little Langdale valley, Cathedral Cave is a jaw-dropping cavern with a spectacular central slate pillar. Surrounding it are a series of mines and tunnels, some of which can also be explored. The cave makes for a great focus point for a hike or mountain bike trek and is located around 4 miles from the Coniston Shepherd Lodges and can be reached along various roads, footpaths or bridleways, the best route depending on your chosen mode of transport.  The well-used miner’s track linking Coppermines and Tilberthwaite Valley’s being one of our favourites. There are free route maps available from the Coppermines Office or Bluebird Car Park in Coniston village.
