When booking a cottage for the family it can be hard to find something that suits everyone.
We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite Lake District cottages for families, and who they might be best suited to. We’ve included the number of guests a cottage sleeps, but if you have baby under 2 who will sleep in a travel cot (and not a bed), they won’t count towards the number of guests. Bridge House, Coniston Sleeps 8-16
Best for: Multi-generational families needing flexible accommodation.
Bridge House sleeps 8 guests across 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. Add on the inter-connecting Old Post and that increased to 12 guests, 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. Add on Bridge Suite and then it increases again to 16 guests. What’s more, each of the cottages comes with its own hot tub meaning you’ll have use of up to 3 hot tubs during your stay.
The huge kitchen dining room in Bridge House is perfect for family get-togethers. There’s ample room in the spacious sitting room with log fire too. Add in an extra ground floor w.c., drying room central village location, and up to 3 hot tubs, and any family will find Bridge House is the perfect base for a Lake District family break at any time of year.
1 Dixon, Coniston Sleeps up to 10
Best for: Active families wanting to explore
The 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms on offer at 1 Dixon Ground mean there’ll be no arguing over who goes in the shower first. With walks from the door including Coniston Old Man and Coniston Water lake shore a 15 minute walk away, 1 Dixon is perfect for families on the go looking for lots of bedrooms and bathrooms. Plus, it’s right next door to the Sun Inn where you can enjoy a hearty lunch in the beer garden or evening drinks by the fire. And if other family members are looking for a nearby, yet separate place to stay, then Number 2 and Number 4 Dixon Ground next door and next door but 2 respectively, offer that extra, self-contained accommodation.
Thwaite Cottage, Coniston Sleeps up to 8
Best for: that extra special family holiday
The exceptional Thwaite Cottage sleeps 8 guests across 4 unique and quirky bedrooms – there’s also 4 bathrooms too so no queuing for the shower.
History meets modern in this characterful and luxurious house a guest’s every need has been catered for. For families looking for outdoor space, you’ll struggle to find better in the Lake District. Springbank and Summerbank Cottages, Coniston Sleeps up to 8
Best for: Tech loving families with teenagers
These 2 modern & beautiful separate cottages are ideal for 2 smaller families needing accommodation very close yet separate, or for families with adult children – who would get their own neighbouring accommodation.
This pair of luxury cottages are stacked to the rafters with top of the range technology. Not only are there smart TVs in each of the cottage’s comfortable lounge’s there’s also one in each of the bedrooms. So everyone can watch or stream what they want, when they want.
The kitchens are each fully equipped with high specification appliances, ensuring that cooking and preparing a family feast within them is a real pleasure.

Best for: families seeking accommodation all on one level
With 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms Low How offers slexible, single level accommodation. Each of the beds can be made up as a queen size or twin singles making it ideal for families of all shapes and sizes. It’s also our only cottage with its own sauna, perfect for relaxing tired muscles after a day on the fells. The huge lounge is the perfect place for families to gather in the evening around the log burner. There’s also ample outside space too, with a lawned garden enjoying lake views of Coniston Water.
Beckside Cottage, Coniston Sleeps up to 8
There’s plenty on offer for families at Beckside Cottage. The four bedrooms offer accommodation for 8 guests with various and flexible bed arrangements possible.
The 2 sitting rooms offer plenty of space for the family to spread out, while the large rear garden offers places for play or al fresco dining.
The walk into Coniston village centre along the former railway line which runs behind the cottage is perfect for families, being pushchair friendly as well as being well away from the road. There are stunning fell, mountain and lakeshore walks, all accessible from Beckside Cottage’s front door. Add in all the amenities of Coniston village, and you have the ideal base for a family break in the Lakes.
